7/28/2022 (Permalink)
Have you ever wondered what could happen when lightning strikes your home?
Firstly, did you know that lightning is more likely to strike your home if it was built on a waterway? Lightning is attracted to water. We recently had a fire damage clean-up in a home that took more than a year to complete (including reconstruction) because it struck a light fixture in the basement and inflamed three floors of the home. Lightning damage can create several different types of damage to your home. Here are a few types of lightning damage:
- Fired damage - caused by a direct strike to wood or other flammable substance
- Electrical shorts - caused by electricity traveling through your wiring
- Shock wave damage - damage caused by the wave of energy released during a strike.
Whether it is storm or lightning damage, we are here to help after the storm settles.
How to Make Your Fire Safety Plan

Fire Safety- When it comes to escaping the damage
Have you ever thought about what would happen if you were awoken in the middle of the night by a fire in your home? We know that safety is your number one priority if there is a fire in your home. We have gathered some tips on how to combat a fire to get out to safety.
1. Scope Out Your Home
Scoping out your home before a home fire may be a life-saving decision. Fire incites panic, and that can lead to poor decision-making in an emergency. You want to make sure you can get out safely of any room you are in when an emergency strikes.
2. Move Any Obstacles
When planning your route, make sure that there is nothing in your way, and never will be. You can ensure the integrity of your escape plans by keeping dressers and tables away from windows and pathways.
3. Practice Your Escape Route
Once escape routes are planned and pathways cleared, practice escaping. Many fire departments and municipalities encourage families to practice these routes monthly. You want to make sure your family is well practiced and versed in this route. You do not want to plan it, and everyone panic if the real thing ever happens.
4. Seek Out Professional Guidance
Local fire departments or even government offices can offer help in planning a good escape and an emergency plan during a fire emergency, or any emergency for that matter. You want to make sure depending on the size and structure of your home that you and your family can still safely escape during an emergency.

Are you prepared in 2022?
3/5/2022 (Permalink)
We can all agree there have been several different emergencies in the past few years. Businesses have been closing and it has been a hard time for employee turnover.
Let us help you be prepared!
The way to combat future years like the ones we have recently experienced is to prepare. Here at SERVPRO® of Henderson, Webster, Union, McLean & Crittenden Counties, we are here to help. One of the first ways we can help you prepare is through an Emergency Ready Plan or ERP. ERP's are a customized plan to help you get ready for unprecedented events and disasters.
These types of contingency plans can help you keep control during an emergency. When the weather hits sometimes you do not have time to be prepared. Whether it be snow, rain, or thunderstorm that create water or fire damages and power outages, being prepared is the way.
Sometimes it can be hard to recall all the information you might need during an emergency. Our ERP keeps utility, fire, medical, square footage, water shut-off, and other information so that you do not have to remember it off the top of your head during a time of distress.
One way to help alleviate damages is to stay prepared before they can happen to your business. For information on ERPs, contact your local marketing rep or call our local offices for help.
Is your Henderson Basement Flooding?
3/4/2022 (Permalink)
During this time of year, spring can bring a lot of unwanted flooding. Flooding in your Henderson home can occur when you have low floors. Here are a few tips that you can use to help combat flooding in your basement:
Location: When rainfall occurs in excess, it can cause your basement to flood. Know your flood zones and check with your insurance company on possible flood damage coverage.
Basement Drains: If you know your home is in a low area, consider a drainage system or a sump pump.
Sources: When water damage enters your home, the best way to not allow it to happen again is to find the source. Drains and gutter systems can be placed in the wrong area and can even be placed in a way that directs water to your home, instead of away. Also, knowing your roof, foundation, and other areas to check on cracks and places of weakness. Consider a french drain or gutters that divert into a place not near your home.
When flooding enters your home, you can call a professional to help. Reach out to us at SERVPRO® of Henderson, Webster, Union, McLean & Crittenden Counties.
The three types of Storm Damages
3/3/2022 (Permalink)
Three Types of Storm Damage
Storm damage is a type of service we can help homeowners with, but there are several things that can go wrong during a spring storm.
Wind Damage
One of those extra aspects of a storm that hits is wind damage. Wind can create a host of issues for your home. Wind can upend your roof. When the shingles are rocked and slid out of place, this creates water damage.
Lightning Damage
Another one of those side effects of storms is lightning damage. Lightning does not just light up the sky, but it can light up your house if it strikes just so. Lightning strikes can cause severe fire damage and be unsafe.
Flooding Damage
When storms hit, floods likely follow. Flooding can get inside of your home from multiple sources. Basements, crawl spaces, and even garages can flood from heavy rains. Outside of your home, flooding can disrupt driving situations and municipal water systems.

Categories of Water Damage in your Henderson Home
2/26/2022 (Permalink)
Water damage comes in all shapes and sizes!
Did you know there are three different types of water damage? Water can be a serious issue that causes more than water damage if left untreated by a professional. We have examples and definitions below to help you better understand the three different categories of water.
Category 1: "Clean Water"
This is water from a clean source, such as a broken clean water supply line or faucet. If left untreated, category 1 water can quickly degrade into category 2 or 3 water depending upon such factors as time, temperature, and contact with contaminants.
Category 2: "Gray Water"
This water has a significant level of contamination that could cause discomfort or illness if ingested. Sources for category 2 water may include washing machine overflow; toilet overflow with some urine, but no feces; or dishwasher overflow.
Category 3: "Black Water"
This water is grossly unsanitary and could cause severe illness or death if ingested, and any contact should be avoided. Sources for category 3 water could include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.
Knowing these categories could save you time, money, and a possible health risk. Call us today for more information on water damage in your home or business.
Fire Damage at Commercial Gas Station in Henderson
2/23/2022 (Permalink)
Fire damage can impact your commercial property in a variety of ways.
Have you seen fire damage at a gas station?
In Henderson, a local gas station had a semi-truck catch fire in the parking lot. The cause is unknown but when this truck caught on fire chaos ensued.
Fires are dangerous and can spread rapidly. Thankfully, this fire was contained to the truck but the smoke damage reached far and wide. This fire damage impacted the inside of the gas station and restaurant.
Fire damage structural clean-up is not the only aspect that SERVPRO® of Henderson, Webster, Union, McLean, & Crittenden Counties can take care of after a fire. Smoke damage is a secondary damage from a fire that can reach your contents even if your property was not the one on fire, depending on the severity of the fire.
If you own local properties that have motor vehicles that frequent in and out, even if just in a parking lot, it can create secondary damages for you should a vehicle or neighboring building set fire.
This gas station had the insurance coverage but always check with your policy to see what you have coverage over.
We are here to help with contents cleaning, which is what this commercial property needs. We were able to restore what contents could be saved.
Remember, fire damage is not only smoke and structure --it's contents too.

1/17/2022 (Permalink)
Call our offices to find out more on how we can help you with your ice dam mitigation.
Ice Dams at your Business
During these winter months, ice dams are a problem for your business. Most people who know about ice dams think this is only an issue for residential buildings, but your business could be at risk too.
Ice dams happen when snow builds up on your roof and then melts. The water slides down to your gutters and refreezes to create a block against the rest of the snow from properly draining off your roof. The melted snow has no where to go so it goes inside of your business.
These ice dams create water damages that can often go unnoticed for days or weeks. This makes them especially dangerous because the water damage can create secondary damage for your business.
If you suspect your business has suffered an ice dam, please call our office today so we can further assist you.

Restore your Roof | How we Do It
When storm damage occurs roofs can be one of the first victims. When there is damage or suspected damage, it best to take the first step by contacting a professional to inspect.
Whether you have missing shingles or just broken or cracked ones, either problem can allow water to seep into your building's interior. As a result, several items may restored:
- Roof support beams
- Insulation
- Drywall
- Ceiling tiles
The sooner you call the professionals, the smoother the cleanup process will go. You want to eliminate secondary damages, so make sure to make the call fast.
2. Decontaminate
Flood water, particularly that which has run into your building through a roof leak, is considered contaminated water. This category 3 water will need to be cleaned and sanitized. You want to keep your employees, customers, and any others in your building safe. Technicians may use special machinery and industrial cleaners to sanitize the space.
3. Rebuild
Once all traces of damage and filth are gone, the restoration stage can begin. Specialists rebuild the interior portions that were destroyed, replacing walls, ceilings and insulation. Then they repair the damaged roof so that it can get back to protecting your building.
These are our processes to help with the restore and reconstruct of your building. Call us today for more information.

What is that damp smell in your Henderson home?
8/2/2021 (Permalink)
When you get home from a long day of work, and you notice that there is an odor in your home that you do not recognize --it can be cause for concern.
So, what is that smell?
1. It could be mold. When mold spores begin to grow they can emit a smell that is similar to damp, wet clothes or a wet dog. It is not a fun smell, but it is a wake-up call to find out the verdict of the odor.

How to Keep your Henderson Home Safe from Fire Damages

Candle Safety
Candles are a fan favorite in almost every household. We know they are always nice to have when company comes over or when you need a relaxing moment. We agree, candles are great, but not always when it comes to fire safety. Candles are open flames, so there is always a risk when you light one of these up. Here are a few tips to keep your home safe and smelling good at the same time:
- Always keep curtains away from open flames. It may seem like your curtains or fabric are far enough away from your candles, but we suggest the further the better. Even if you think the candle is far enough away, move it a few inches more, just in case. Candles are open flames, so even a slight breeze could cause the curtains to blow right into them, especially if they are long pieces of fabric.
- Always blow out candles before going to sleep. It does not matter how long you plan to be asleep or even if there are other people in the home. If you lit the candle, always blow it out and put a lid over it before leaving a room. It does not matter if you are heading to be absent for fifteen minutes or an hour.
- Always keep your pets away from open flames. We love our fur babies at SERVPRO® of Henderson, Webster, Union, McLean, & Crittenden Counties, but we know they can be unpredictable. Even the most well-trained and veteran pet can have a bad moment. Animals may not understand that fire means danger, so leaving an open flame within their reach can only mean one thing --potential fire hazard. Keep your fur babies away from areas with candles or do not light a candle for the night until your pets are put to bed.
We love candles, but we do not love when they create a fire hazard for you or your family. It is always best to follow best practices to keep your home or business safe from fire damages.

Fire Cleanup and Restoration
2/28/2021 (Permalink)
Capturing and Removing Residues
There are several ways to capture and remove residue on contents that a fire has left damaged.
One of those ways is to vacuum:
For removing dry particles that are loosely attached to surfaces use a cleaned filter vacuum. This can help catch the particles before they get more heavily damaged.
Another way to capture that residue is through dissolving:
Residues and soils that are not loose particles have to be dissolved first, before they are removed.
We have a soft-contents division that can be of assistance when it comes to your fire damages contents. We have a specialized ESPORTA machine and trained technicians to bring your contents back to life after a fire has damaged them. Trust the professionals with your beloved items. We are here to help.

Roof Damages -- Prevent them from happening.
1/29/2021 (Permalink)
When storm's are about to occur, there are a variety of things in your home that you could do to protect it. Some emergencies can not be avoided, but prepping your home, can help.
There are a few instances you can take to prevent further damage before a storm.
Protect your roof
Protect your roof from damages before they happen. When a storm is on the horizon, make sure extra shingles are nailed down, any holes have been aided, and other roof damages have been fixed prior. These methods give your roof the best chance of holding down during heavy winds, rain, and other storm factors.
Trim your trees
Trim your trees to combat roof damage. Another factor of roof damage is that of tree breakage. When trees are unkempt, old, or just in the wrong area they can cause reprehensible damages to your home or business. The best way to keep those damages at bay is to prevent them from being in the way. Cut down old trees so that they are not easily swayed by winds into your home. Try to trim back branches and other yard debris to keep them out of harms way from your roof or windows.
These are just a few tips on how you can keep your home safe during storm season. Follow along to our blog and social media for other storm damage safety tips.
Preventative Measures for Storm Damage
1/25/2021 (Permalink)
Here's how to create preventative measures for storm damages in your home--
First, check your water and pipes. People near water are first at risk during storms. For this reason, try not to run water during a storm because metal pipes are precise conductor vessels of water that attract lightening.
When running water during a storm, you risk overflow (from having to evacuate), storm surges, and flooding from outside areas. Be aware and cautious when storms could be prevalent in your area. It is always best to have an emergency plan to prevent damages and other dangers during emergency storm times of the year.
If a storm has damaged your home or property, give SERVPRO® of Henderson, Webster, Union, McLean, & Crittenden Counties a call, so we can help.

It's almost that time!
Burst Pipes
When December, January, and February hit-- one of the water damages that occurs most often for home owners is when a pipe freezes, bursts, and then causes heinous amounts of water damage in a home. When a family goes on vacation or away for a few days (or even overnight,) and the temperature drops below a certain degree the pipes will freeze. There are several ways to combat that:
- Wrapping the pipes
- Leaving cabinets open
- Letting faucets drip
Ice Dams
Another creation of water damage from ice, are ice dams. The definition of an ice buildup is a long the edge of your roof) is what we refer to as an ice dam. The ice builds up and won’t let the water run off your roof when the ice begins to thaw. Roofs are great for shedding water off your home, but they are not designed to hold water. That water will then run into your home causing a lot of damage. While the last bit of warm weather is still here it’s a perfect time to prepare.
- Be aware of areas on your roof where ice generally builds up.
- Have the insulation in your home or building inspected to ensure its well-insulated.
- Consider having heat cable and rain gutters installed in areas that tend to build up ice to help ensure you don’t have any problems.
Water damage can happen to anyone's home or business. Try these tips this winter to prevent these emergencies from happening. If you need water damage help, call our offices today for more information.
